SOCIAL GATHERINGS.
On Saturday evening the pupils of Miss Leila Armitage and Miss Joyce Smith gave a recital in the Penwomen's Club rooms. Large bowls of cherry blossom and Argentine pea were chosen for the floral decorations. The varied programme was enthusiastically received. Miss Armitage wore Chinese red taffeta, and Miss Smith White georgette. • • ♦ • A bridge party took place last evening at the home of Miss Muriel Sanders, Mountain Road, in honour of Miss Marie Jones, of Neutral Bay, Sydney. The guest of honour wore pink georgette and her hostess was in black lace and georgette. Theitables were arranged in the drawing room, which was decorated with some fine bowls of roses. Among the guests were: Mrs. Noel Hockin, and the Misses Margaret Rainger, Pat Buddie, Wilna. Frater, Jean Kent, Phyllis Andrews and Molly Mitchelson. • » • • The Peter Pan Cabaret was the scene last Saturday evening of a very enjoyable party given by his friends, in honour of the coming of age of Mr. Murray DeC. Thomson. A special feature of the evening was the presentation by Mr. G. Bellve and intimate friends of a gold dress watch and chatelaine. Among the guests were: Misses Jean Bctcock, Betty Boeock, Frances Birch, Zoe Thomson, Joan Levick, Stella Nicholson, Madge Joll. • » • • The annual social of the Flexile Guild, of the staff of Dearslv's, Ltd., was held on Monday evening last in the St. Sepulchre's Hall. There were about 140 present, the evening being pleasantly spent in dancing and games and musical items were rendered by Miss Fletcher and Messrs. Meikleborough aijd McMurchy. At the supper table the president, Mr. Herbert Dearsly, presented to Miss Wilkinson on behalf of the guild a miniature silver cup as a mark of the pleasure of the members that she had gained the distinction of winning the ladies' table tennis championship cup this season. Miss Wilkinson was accompanist for the evening. r * • * •
A successful social and dance was held in the Leisure Lounge, Karangahape Road, last Tuesday evening, under the auspices of the newly-formed. Gillies Avenue Relief Workers' Cricket Club. A fine programme of selected items was presented, including a tap dance by Mr. De Rose. The spot waltz prize was won by Mr. Muns and partner, and the dance music was supplied by Mrs. Buffett and an orchestra, and a light supper by the committee. Among those present were: Mrs. Kilgour, in blue floral organdie; Mrs. Dixon, powdered blue crepe de chine; Mrs. V'eart, green floral voile, with green satin jacket; Mrs. Moore, blue , fulani, trimmed with diagonal stripes; Mrs. De Rose, black georgette, with green velvet jacket; Mrs. Buffett, apricot taffeta; Mrs. Hirst, white silk, red jacket; Miss New by, yellow satin, with black jacket; Mrs. O'Brien, blue georgette; Miss Rubrick, white silk; Mrs. Muns, figured velvet; Miss Buffett, black lace, with white cape; Miss West, red velvet; Mrs. Barnard, red organdie; Mrs. Wallace, black sequinned georgette; Mrs. Clarkson, pink floral voile. * » - » • The social afternoon organised by Mrs. D. P. O'Leary, in aid of St. Mary's Church was a great success, the convent schoolroom being crowded yesterday with some 300 ladies. The large gathering, which included many visitors from Auckland suburbs as far as Oneliunga, was welcomed by Mrs. O'Leary. All thoroughly enjoyed the musical programme, andi the afternoon tea served bv the ladies of the parish. The floral decorations enhanced the pleasurable atmosphere, large bowls of roses, irises and other seasonable blooms being arranged about the room and tables. The items comprised pianoforte solos by Mrs. H. Stebbing and Miss Joan Fahey, songs -by Mesdames Keith Harrison, C. Hansen and F. Max, duets by Mrs. V. P. Scaletti and Miss L. Kilbride, and recitations by Misses Cruickshanks and Noeline Peck. The accompaniments were played by Miss Rubv Gifford. The Rev. Father J. T. Taylor expressed appreciation of the. efforts of the organiser and her helpers, Rnd for the splendid response which resulted in that large, happy and enthusiastic gathering.,
Last Saturday the Buckland's Beach Bowling Club held its opening day under adverse conditions. The inclement weather, however, did not deter the bowlers from playing on the wellconditioned green. The president, Mr. T. Baster, welcomed the visitors and the president's daughter, Miss Ola Baster, bowled the jack arid, declared the green opened for play. The visiting wives were entertained by the ladies' committee in the artistically decorated pavilion, where afternoon tea was served. Miss Dorothy Mills, of Birkenhead, leaves on December 15 by the Rotorua for England, in order to further her study of dramatic art in London. She was" hostess yesterday at the John Court, Ltd., rooms, when she gave a farewell morning tea to the mothers of her pupils. Miss Mills is to be entertained on December 6 by the Northeote committee and the Plunket Society, in recognition of her past assistance. ° • • » A happy time was spent on Tuesday evening at the Hallow-e'en evening held in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Hall, Otahuhu. The evening opened with a Hallow-e'en tableaux, which was followed by a number of very old Scottish customs, including apple bobbing, bun eating, and many others that' delighted those present. Exhibitions of Scottish dancing were given by Miss June McLaren and Miss Gwen Mitchell, the gymnasium girls also doing an eightsome reel. After supper had been served the Rev. A. M. Elliffe presented Misses E. Moffitt and M. Gardiner with bouquets and small gifts as a token of appreciation from the parents for the excellent manner in which they had trained the children for the plays staged during the year by the St. Andrew's Bible class. The singing of the National Anthem brought a very happy evening to a conclusion.
The monthly luncheon of the Mercantile Auxiliary Club was held yesterday, members again bringing donations of groceries towards the Christmas parcels being prepared by the club. The secretary, Miss Joyce Dickey, reported that practically all matters in connection with the "club's charitable work for the year were now complete, and that the "December luncheon, the final for the year, would be merely a reunion of members. A resolution was passed expressing sympathy with Miss Isabel Wilson, a club member, and her family in their recent sad bereavement. Opportunity was taken of wishing bon voyage to Miss Atliea Craven, who is leaving shortly by the Mariposa for a three months' holiday in Australia. Those present at luncheon were: Misses Joyce Dickey, E. McNeil, Laura Edgar, Edna Thomas, H. Dickey, Mona Boyd, Peggy Lee, Jean Reynolds, Joyce Smythe, Moira Clark, and Atliea Craven. « • -» * A special meeting of the Otahuliu branch of the Plunket Society was held on Tuesday evening. In the absence of Mrs. Murdoch, Mrs. J. E. Gillies occupied the chair, other members of the committee present being Meedames H. T. Clements, F. W. Martin, N. Walters, J. F. Flood, F. W. Grey, A. McLaren, J. Ayres, H. Turner and A. C. Boniface. Great satisfaction was expressed at the result of the recent ball held in aid of the branch, and which proved to be. a most brilliant function. Mrs. Gillies referred in eulogistic terms to the efforts of Mrs. Clements, who was ever an indefatigable worker in the interests of the society. Activities for the current season were fully discussed and the outlook for the Otaliuhu branch is exceedingly good, the welfare of the local babies being in the hands of a very energetic and enthusiastic committee.
A hard-up dance 1 held by the girls of the Holv Trinity Bible class took place on Wednesday evening in the Parish Hall, Otahuhu, the proceeds of which go to the tearooms of the forthcoming parish fair. The judge, Mrs. McDell, finally awarded to Miss Mavis Tucker and Mr. Roy McDell the prizes for the best hard-up costume. Mr. E. Pearse presented the Monte Carlo prizes to Miss Given Ellery and Mr. E. Richardson. A dainty supper was served by the Bible class girls, headed by Mrs." W. E. Mears. Among those present were: Mesdames G. McDell, H. McDell, J. Moss, G. Webber, C. West, C. Craft, W. Halford, J. Taylor, W. E. The Xorthcote Plunket committee last evening agreed to assist at the floral fete organised by the Auckland Plunket Society, to be held on the ISth inst., at the Ellerslie racecourse. » » *" * An enjoyable afternoon was epent at the Farmers' tearooms on Wednesday, in aid of the Mount Albert Welfare League, when Mrs. Duke Clayton acted as hostess. Bowls of -Iceland poppies and irises made a charming decoration in the Fabian rooms last night, when the Auckland Piano Students' Association held a very pleasant evening. A varied programme was presented, including a pianoforte duet by Misses B. Pelham and N. Jones; recitations by Miss-Mary Cruickshank, pianororte solos by Miss S. Arrowsmith, vocal solos by Mr. S. Stephenson,' humorous sketch by Misses Leila and Iris Arimtage, and exhibition dances by Joy Beatty and Neil Arrow. Competitions were also enjoyed, the prizewinners being Misses Knight and Warren, and Mr. Jones. Supper was served, and the evening concluded with dancing, with Mr. Vaughan at the piano. The official opening of the Halliburton Johnstone Croquet Club was held on Saturday, in the presence of a large gathering. The president, Mrs. Tv Storey, welcomed the friends and visitors from kindred clubs. Sirs. Bade- ' ley, president of the croquet council, congratulated the club on the progres| maintained and the condition of the lawns. On behalf of the trustees, MeesrS. Halliburton Johnstone, W. Phillips and C. Hawkins (tennis club), also congratulated the club and conveyed good wishes for the forthcoming season. Mrg. Storey played the first ball and declared the greens open for play. Afternoon tea was served in the pavilion, the tables being tastefully decorated in flowers of the club's colours, maroon and white.
