SPRING RACING.
THE NEW ZEALAND CUP. THIRTEEN REMAIN IN. POOR FIELD OF STAYERS. Thirteen remain in the New Zealand Cup, and from a stayer's point of view it is the worst field that has been accepted for for many years. Now that Polydora has been withdrawn there is nothing that seems to stand, out, but all the same the race may prove an interesting one. Inflation, on his recent trip to Sydney, won over seven furlongs and a mile, while he finished fifth in the Metropolitan Handicap, one mile and five furlongs, at Randwick early last month. Minerval ran second last year to Fast Passage, but has done very little racing since then. If at his best he would have a good chance. The Smuggler was second to Silver Scorn in the Dunedin Cup, one mile and a half, last season and has shown good form over a mile and a quarter. He recently ran third to Chrysology and Rebel Song in the Mosgiel Handicap at Dunedin. Brambletorn also showed up over ten furlongs last season, while recently Cricket Bat only beat him by a head in the Wellington Racing Club Handicap, one mile and three furlongs. Eminent won the Foxton Cup, one mile and a Quarter, this season, while Tout le Mond was third in the Ashburton Handicap, one mile and a quarter, and occupied a similar position in the Timaru Cup and in the Trafalgar Handicap at Trentham.. Palantua has been racing well in the south, winning the Islington Handicap, one mile and a quarter, at the Grand National meeting, while she was third in the Heathcote Handicap, one mile, and won over a mile and a quarter at Gore last week. Rocket was second to Silver Scorn in the New Zealand Derby last November at Riccarton and has raced well over middle distances since then. His success at Trentham last week shows that he is right back to his best form, and as he has shown every sign of staying on he will be one of the chief fancies. Southdown scored over a mile at the same meeting and is an improving three-year-old. Chrysology won the Mosgiel Handicap at Dunedin recently and also the Timaru Cup, but he failed to get into the money in the Wellington Handicap. Ramo and Jaloux finished first and second respectively in the Cup at Banks Peninsula last Saturday, which is their best efforts for some time. Those that may be fancied are: Rocket, Inflation, Palantua, Brambletorn, and Ramo.
