NEWTON BURGLARY
FACTORY ENTERED. ATTEMPT ON OFFICE SAFE. ONLY FEW PENCE STOLEN. For the second time within -three months thieves broke into thd factory and office of the Alva Mineral Water Company, Ltd., in Randolph Street, Newton, last night. On the first occasion the thieves removed two sheets of corrugated iron from the wall of the factory and walked straight in. Last night they cut a complete panel from the back door with the aid of a chisel and a wagon hook, which was broken during the operation. Once inside the factory the thieves went upstairs to the office, where an unsu:cessful attempt was made to force open the safe. With a jemmy or other heavy instrument a hole was cut in the outside cover of the half-ton safe, the hole made being used in an endeavour to lever the front door open. An attempt was made to damage the locking mechanism, but this failed, too. A few pennies and half-pennies which were kept in a glass in the office were stolen. An assortment of aerated waters was placed in a sack ready to take away, but for some reason the drinks were left behind. It is believed that the intruders were disturbed while at work on the safe and left hurriedly.
