DOMAIN GAMES.

GOOD OPENING PLAY. ABANDONMENT BEFORE TIME. MOUNT ALBERT AND HOSKILL IMPRESS. After-a- shower of rain at midday, tlio weather was threatening tor the opening of the season at the Domain, 'on SJutiuuny, and an intermittent drizzle culminated in the calling off of matches thirty-live minutes before time. It was not encouraging weather for either players or supporters, and the state of the wickets and outfields made for erratic performances by the. senior teams. Conditions, however, did not damp the ardour of exponents, and there was plenty of evidence of early rivalry. On No. 2 pitch, Masters opened in promising vein for Pousouby, but it was It. Watkins who revealed best form for 40 runs, the top score. For R.V., Peebles trundled effectively at the start, and then C. Gγ. Finlayson took up the running to end with a tally of five wickets for 67 runs. The Auckland and New Zealand representative earned a spontaneous tribute for a rapid run, slightly off the wicket, to take a low catch that dismissed Innes (14), who looked likely to knock up a good score. Following the early dismissal of J. Lonergan and Robertshaw, T. Bennett, Everson, Viscoe and E. Watk:ns stablilised the position, and the lastmentioned, with R. Broberg, defended tenaciously to remain unbeaten when the game was stopped, leaving Ponsonby a wicket in hand, with 156 on the board. R.V. should be capable, judged on last season's showing, of making the resumption of the match more than ordinarily interesting. In the main, Harbour Board were below par, the brightest spots in their batting coming from 11. Stallworthy (30), M. Williams (not out 41) and N. Martin (21). Indeed, but for .a masterly display by Williams, who previously had gone off with a leg injury, the team would not have reached a century. The "tail" ignobly faded, and, short of Mann, who was on the sick list, the side was dismissed with change bowlers for a, matter of 116 runs. The rout was a credit to the work of the promoted Mount Roskill Club, which ds expected to give further evidence of its strength-in the continuation of its innings: This opened with the early fall of a wicket, biit Heazlewood appeared to be steady for 13 ruiis not out in a tally of 28. ' ; The honours of the day fell thick upon Mount Albert Grammar Old Boys, a team that had a run of ill-luck last year, but appears braced up to become a prominent factor in this season's affairs. Although Aiken was dislodged at the outset, his partner took- no chances, and when Woolloxall (who-was never quite at home to Green Lane's veteran bowler, Kerr), and V. Butler quickly fell out of the picture, it was with Howell that the score was raised to a healthy level. Howell was particularly aggressive, and this stimulated Hobden to greater effort. Hebden picked his strokes judiciously, and was unfortunate to succumb to a leg-before decision to Tomlinson when his contribution was 70, shortly after Howell, whose driving shots evoked anplnusP, had rpached 48. The pair compiled 112, which enabled Mount Albert to emerge with a total of 179 runs for five wickets. Kerr troubled the batsmen, but Tomlinson and Menzies also shared the bowling credit for Green Lane, who seem t( facf a hoavy task in this ■ game, but are • nevertheless quite capable of returning' the compliment.
