RACING AT RICCARTON

N.Z. CUP MEETING. ACCEPTANCE LIST POSTED. THE FAVOURITE IS WITHDRAWN. (By Telegraph.—Special to " Star.") CHRISTCHURCH, this day. Acceptances and final payments for the first day of the New Zealand Cup carnival (November 4, C, 8 and 11) at Riccarton on Saturday, and also for the New Zealand Derby and Oaks Stakes on the second and third days respectively closed last night. The surprise defections in the Cup field arc the withdrawal of Polydora, who had ruled favourite for the last month, and Takakua. The latter had been second favourite along with Rocket since their success at the Wellington meeting. Polydora had won the two races she contested since the weights appeared, the Kurow Cup, one mile and a quarter, and a week later the Ranfurly Handicap, one mile, at the Dunedin meeting. Since then she had continued to do good work, giving her trainer no cause for anxiety until last week. On Wednesday, however, while being led along the road she took fright and swerved quickly, giving herself a knock on one of her legs. H. Nurse was not greatly alarmed over the incident, but gave the mare an easy time for a few days. She was worked at a sound pace on Sunday, and again yesterday morning, boing apparently all right when she pulled up. Her trainer was not so well pleased later in the day, and eventually decided not to go on with her Cup engagement. The withdrawal of Takakua, though overshadowed by the non-acceptance of Polydora, was another unwelcome incident. He had won twice and been placed four times lately—his Trentham form being attractive—and he was one of the most fanced of North Island candidates. The other two scratehings for the New Zealand Cup were Speedmint and Water Polo. The acceptances are:— SPRING HURDLES of 20flsovs. One mile and three-quarters. Glenromney has not been overtaxed since he Avondale meeting, but is doing everyhing required of him in. a satisfactory aanner, and he may be seen out on. the econd day of the approaching meeting at CllersHe. This three-year-old is more solidooking than he was last season, and when '\ Gilchrist gets the brown gelding back o his best condition again a hack sprint vent should not be beyond him.

CRUACHAN BACK. TO FORM. Cruachan showed good form when he ran third in the open sprint, the Bollard Memorial, at the Waikato Hunt meeting on Labour Day to King's Archer and Tenakoe, being narrowly beaten for second place. His next appearance was in the hurdles on the first day of the Ohineinuri meeting last Thursday, and he was never further away than third at any part of it, being beaten into second place at the finish by. Welcome Boy, to whom he was conceding 201b. On Saturday, with 21b more to carry, and a quarter of a mile further to go, he was not nearly as well fancied, and he was rather lucky to win. He followed Wee Pat and Free Air into the Btraight, and the former ran down the hurdle, carrying Free Air off and losing a lot of ground herself. This allowed Cruachan to jump to the front, and lip scored nicely. Only for Wee Pat's behaviour Cruachan would have had a mucH harder task to. score.: However, it was a. good performance on his part, seeing the impost he carried, and he. should do well in forthcoming events. He is not engaged on the first day of •!;hp Auckland meeting, but is ir the Marvukau Hurdles on Monday.
