NEW CHURCH HALL.
NAMED AFTER MINISTER. Despite torrential rain, between 70 and 80 people attended a special service at the Tawhiri Road (One Tree Hill) branch of the Onehunga Presbyterian Church on Sunday afternoon. Numerous preparations were made by voluntary helpers. The service was in two parts, the first celebrating the eighth anniversary of the foundation by means of the Sunday school commenced .in a resident's garage in 192:3, when there was no other in the district, and the second a ceremony naming the hall, which is designed to be enlarged later, "The Scott Presbyterian Ball," in honour of the Rt. Rev. D. D. Scott, who leaves the Onehunga charge next month after 28 years' ministry. Mr. J, W. Ryburn, Moderator of the Auckland Presbytery, presided, and gave a missionary address to the children. He appealed for help for the children's effort for this year, which is to advance the work of the Kong Cliueii Hospital, Canton. In the second part of the service he referred to Mr. Scott's interest in the cause of home and Maori missions and the large part he had taken .in establishing the branch causes in his own parish of recent years, the Tawhiri Road one being the first. He then bestowed the selected name on the building. Mr. H. A. Stoupe, session clerk, spoke, and an historical statement was read by Mr. D. S. Chalmers, convener of the local committee. This statement is to be engrossed and illuminated and will bear the photographs of Mr. Scott and the late Miss M. M. Binning, whose bequest provided the nucleus of the site fund. The record also commemorates the pioneer long ministry of the late Rev. George Brown, M.A., who died almost a centenarian. Mr. Scott acknowledged the honour to him in permanently connecting his name with the hall,' the progress of which had been very pleasing to his officers and himself. In a short social period following, the men's society of the main church provided tea. On the same day the month of special services at the Onehunga Church was concluded with missionary addresses, the Rev. E. R. Harries preaching in the morning and the Rt. Rev. D. I). Scott at the evening service, after which he officiated at an open communion in which a large number, 14 of whom were welcomed into the membership, partook.
