RELIGIOUS INTOLERANCE.
Two correspondents emphasise the cruelty of Cromwell and his soldiers to the Irish Catholics in 1049. This was probably a retributive punishment for what happened to the Protestants of Ulster on October 23, 1041. Before beginning their horrible work the perpetrators of this slaughter received the Sacrament from the priests, and swore that they would not leave a Protestant alive in the kingdom. , The story'of the massacre, which is more like that of the Indian Mutiny in 1857, id too dreadful to set down, but suffice it to say that at the lowest computation 40,000, and, according to other accounts believed in at the time, no less than 200,000 and 300,000, fell victims to the vengeance of Popery. Authorities are Sir John Temple's "History of the Irish Rebellion"; Brodie's "History of the British Empire," 111., 109; Reid's "History of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland," 1., 30S-330.
