POTATO DIGGERS.
BUSY DAYS AT PUKEKOHE. HUNDREDS OF TONS RAILED. The digging of new potatoes at Pukekohe has started, and yesterday there wae unusual activity on Pukekohe Hill, diggers and pickers working at top speed all day. As the price has slowly dropped, the demand has increased, until the produce merchants are kept extremely busy securing sufficient potatoes.to meet the demand. In addition, supplies arc now coming in from the Bombay Hill and other close-lying districts. The season has been particularly good, and the qualify is excellent. Last week over 300 tons of potatoes were railed from Pukekohe, compared with 200 tons for the corresponding week of last year, practically all being railed to Wellington. Up to 5 p.m. yesterday over SO tons had been loaded at the railway, and it was expected that when operations ceased the total tonnage would exceed 100. Loading was continued till 9 p.m. At about- 4.30 p.m. the motor trucks loaded with potatoes were waiting in a queue to be unloaded, so that they could return for another , load. The stationmaster at Pukekohe said last evening that this was. "only a start," and that the loading operations would increase considerably each day from now on.
