MUDDLING RACE.

Because of the muddling pace set, Peter Pirate was able to win the Jellicoe Handicap, hunted right out, by nearly three lengths, but had the race been truly run over the first mile the result might have been different. Jewel Pointer whipped round at the start, but even so, despite the several lengths he lost, he was right on the tail of the field at the end of half a mile. Lady Coronado dawdled along in front, and anything could have gone to the front in the first mile and a half. Before reaching the straight Peter Pirate headed Tactless, who had been momentarily in charge, and B. Kennerley's horse swung round the home turn well clear, and went on to beat Meteor comfortably. The unlucky horse was Pegaway, who got into a bad pocket on the fence. He made an attempt to go up on the inside half a mile from home, but got knockcd off his feet. He lost his winning chance then, and under the circumstances did well to finish fourth. Great Parrish was always well back, and his run can be passed over. It was just the kind of race where the form will shortly be completely upset. Pegaway and Great Parrish should be the tough ones on Monday.
