WON WELL.
There was a quiet whisper before the Improvers' Handicap that S. August's charge, Great Chum, would be hard to beat, and results bore this out, as tlie tliree-year-old son of Nelson Bingeri won by three lengths after he had taken over the lead nearly live furlongs from home. Although he had a good margin in li is favour at the judge, he was all in, but it was a good performance, as he went 2.52 2-5 from a 3.0 mark. Great Chum was previously trained by G. I'aton, and to-day was his first race since going into S. August's team. Tinokaha was never fur back during the race and finished better than Peter Junior to cut the latter out of second place. The favourite, Bingtrue, iinished a comfortable fourth, going an even race throughout. Kia Kalia went a wretched race, much too bad to be taken as his true form. He did not pace a single furlong without tangling, and finished a long way down the course. Jester lost his driver at the start, and the wellsupported Nellota got stopped ■ when Jester fell. • She made up a lot of ground afterwards, but the handicap was then too much for her. Bingen Chief was too far back to have any chance, but he may be the hard one to beat in the Campbell Handicap on Monday.
