Ono of Auckland's most respected citizens and leading business men, Sir Alfred Bankliart, died suddenly at liia liome in O'Rorke Street this evening. He was Go years of age. Sir Alfred Seymour Bankliart has lived in Auckland for 40 years. He was born at Briton Ferry, Glamorganshire, in IS7O. Educated privately and at

Sir Alfred was closely associated with Sir John Logan Campbell, an association wliich lasted till Sir John's death in 1012. During the last fifteen years of Sir John Logan's life Sir Alfred co-oper-ated with him in the many benefactions which he conferred upon the city. Early in their association came the creation of the .Campbell and Ehrenfried Company, of which Sir Alfred became chairman of directors on the death of Sir Arthur Myers. He was associated with many public institutions, including the New Zealand Insurance Company, Limited, Auckland Gas Company, Auckland Savings Bank—which prospered particularly under his two years of presidencyNew Zealand Breweries, Ltd., and Xew Zealand Newspapers, Ltd. Though Sir Alfred never sought public office, he served most of the city and suburban local bodies in special capacities, being a Sinking Fund Commissioner of Auckland City, Auckland Harbour Board, Drainage Board and Transport Board. He was chairman of the One Tree Hill Domain and Cornwall Park trustees, and for his services to the Auckland Provincial Patriotic and War Relief Association Sir Alfred was awarded M.B.E. In 1920 lie was appointed to the committee of the Auckland Citizens' War Memorial Committee, and had much to do with initiating the erection of the present War Memorial Museum.
