CHILLED BEEF.
EXPORTS FROM DOMINION. TROSPECTS CONSIDERED BRIGHT. The prospects for developing a" prosperous trade in chilled beef with Great Britain are considered very bright by Mr. David Jones, chairman of the New Zealand Meat Producers' Board, who returned to Christchurch recently, after being absent in Great Britain for many months arranging shipping contracts for the Dominion's frozen meat. In an interview with a representative of "The Press" he reported the encouraging results obtained by the second trial shipment, which he inspected on its arrival in England. He considered the success of the trial very satisfactory, although the trade from New Zealand in chilled beef could never assume very great proportions, as the best beef lands were closely settled or used for dairying. "I am satisfied," after seeing the result of this, and another shipment of Australian beef that was 53 days on the voyage, and arrived in excellent condition, that the chilled beef trade can be developed in New Zealand. Certain structural altera-1 tions at the works will be required and they are under consideration. They will improve the carrying quality of the meat. One advantage that chilled beef has over frozen beef is that you can sell it on its arrival. Sometimes the price may be low, but the meat will sell, while frozen meat is not greatly in demand. While waiting for a. favourable market storage charges are incurred, and as it is lowpriced frozen beef cannot stand much extra charge," Mr. Jones concluded.
