THE WEEK'S WORK.
THE FLOWER GARDEN. Brompton Stocks can be sown. A sowing of Wallflowers* Canterbury Bells, Sweet Williams and Aquilegias for next season's flowering can be made. Plant out Nemesia, Antirrhinum, Aquilegia, Canterbury Bells, Hollyhocks, Pansies, Phlox Drummondii. Sow seed of Zinnias, Cosmos, Salvia. Put in cuttings of Chrysanthemums. Old Chrysanthemum stools can be divided and the offsets planted. Prepare the ground for the Chrysanthemums. The soil need not be too rich, but the position should be open, in full sun, and well drained. Dahlia cuttings can be planted. Early-rooted cuttings should be well hardened off before planting out. Lift old Dahlia roots; divide and replant the sections. To do well the Dahlia needs a rich soil and plenty of readily available food. , Sow Aster seeds. Prick out seedlings as soon as large enough to handle. THE VEGETABLE GARDEN. Further sowings of Peas can be made. Sow Carrot, Beet, Spinach, Sweet Corn, Lettuce, Radish. Earth up Potatoes as required. Before drawing up the soil scatter a little sulphate of ammonia along the drills. Sow Parsnips, Broccoli and Brussels Sprouts at once. Make a small sowing of Celery. Prepare ground for planting Kumaras. Sow Cucumbers, Melons, Marrows and Pumpkins. A little protection should be given Cucumbers and Melons. Sow Dwarf and Ruimer Beans for succession. THE GREENHOUSE. Prick out any seedlings as soon as ready. Attend to ventilation and watering as required. Floor and benches should be dampened twice during the day. At first sign of any insect pests fumigate the house. Plants for outside work should be hardened off gradually. A few days in a cold frame is advisable. Pot up Begonias and Gloxinias as they require it. Sowings of Egg Plants, Peppers, Tomatoes for late supplies can be made. THE FRUIT GARDEN. Spray Peaches, Plums, etc., for brown rot. Use lime-sulphur 1-125. Spray Apples and Pears as soon as petals begin to fall. Use arsenate of lead to control Codlin moth. Mulch Strawberries with clean straw, pine needles or hay to keep berries clean.
