AUSTRALIAN TURF.
THE CAULFIELD 1 STAKES. CHATHAM'S KECOBD. SIXTH WIN ON END. And still another record went by the board in the Caulfield Stakes last Saturday, Chatham leading practically ail the way and running the nine furlongs in 1.51, half a second better than the time registered by Heroic, and but a second and a quarter outside Fujisan's Australasian record. Chatham covered himself with glory in winning his sixth successive race this season. He was one of the smartest to move, and, although Dermid had a slight advantage for almost a furlong, Chatham then went ahead of him and gradually worked his way to the rails. For the first two furlongs tiie pace did not seem to be anything out of the ordinary. In fact, the horses appeared to be galloping well within themselves, but immediately the railway side was entered upon it was evident that the' wind assisted the gallopers, and this, together with the excellent condition of the course, enabled the registration of so many fast times. Chatham gave the impression just before entering the straight that all was not well with him, but once heads were turned for home he stretched out in characteristic style, and he responded gamely over the last furlong. Kuvera was the first to tackle him, and there were thrilling moments for backers of the favourite. Chatham, however, beat olf that challenge, and then Middle Watch put in his claim. He, too, made desperate efforts, but half a furlong away it was seen that Chatham was not to be denied, and he came on, amid tumultuous cheers, to win by three-quarters of a length from I Middle Watch, who weakened a little near the post.
