WANGANUI HORSES.

CANDIDATES FOR TRENTHAM. POMP IN GREAT HEART. _ (By Telegraph.—Special Reporter.) WANGANUI, Friday. The local horses engaged at Trentham were mostly restricted to serviceable work yesterday morning, when the conditions were favourable. Spiral and Midian went round at'i lialf pace on the course proper, with the pegs some 20 feet out, and then ran a mile. The boys had been told to keep a good hold of their mounts, but the pair were soon at top and ran the first half mile in 51s, with Spiral a shade in front. So they raced to the turn for home, where Midian ran out a bit wide, and when straightened up again was a couple of lengths behind Spiral, who finished on to run the mile in 1.46%, doing It nicely. I'onip, looking in great heart, was trotted round and then went seven furlongs, the last six in 1.20, comfortably. The son of Absurd always races well at Trentham. Midinette was restricted to pace work on the inside, sprinting up the straight. Though she has a joint, she looks in great order, and all going well should run well at 'Lrcnlham. Rust and Linoleum went six furlongs, taking 30s for the first quarter, and going on to cover the last half mile in 535. Icier, having her first run since the Wangnnui meeting, covered half a mile in 53 4-ss. She is to race at Waverley.
