"ON THE LOOSE."

SON IN FATHER'S CAR.

INTOXICATION , CHARGE.

"Apparently this young man last night pot out on the loose with his father's car," said Mr. W. Xoble, in pleading on behalf of Archibald Roy Leslie, aged 23 labourer, who appeared before Mr Wyvern Wilson, S.M., in the Police Court to-day for being in a state of intoxication while in charge of a motor car in Great North Eoad early this morning. Hβ also pleaded guilty to a charge of casting offensive matter. Detective-Sergeant M. O'Sullivan said at 1.35 this morning, while Constable Snow, of Xewton, was patrolling Great North Road, he saw Leslie and another young.man leave a motor car and walk along to Collins Street. Leslie was unsteady on his feet, and he returned to the car and got in the driver's seat. The constable then took accused to the police station where ho was examined by Dr. Drury, who certified that he was not in a fit s-tate to have .charge of a car. "Two girls, aged 18 and li), say that they were in Karangahape Road last night when Leslie asked them to go for a drive/' added Mr. O'Sullivan. "When they got in the car, it is alleged that Leslie said he had some beer, and that they would have a good time. They all went to a house where the liquor was consumed. Later, Leslie went away and returned with a small keg of beer, so he must have consumed a considerable quantity." Mr. iS'oble said Leslie was the son of most respectable parents. Yesterday he had been driving his father's car, and drove all the way from Raglan to Auckland. He had not had much liquor. "Ho has had a good character in the past, and I hope it will not be necessary to fine him a large amount, which he cannot perhaps pay,"' said Mr. Noble. "There was little traffic on the road at the hour mentioned", and he was not actually'drivingthe car when the constable saw him." Leslie was fined £10 -on- the first charge, and his license to drive was suspended for six months. On the second charge lie was fined £1.
