SHOTGUN USED.

BULL'S EYE SHOT OUT.

POVERTY BAY FARMER FINED.

POLICE DESTROY ANIMAL.

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) GISBORXE, this day. That there arc more ways than one in which it is dangerous to take liberties with a bull has been impressed upon a middle-aged man, Benjamin Gardner Milner, who was yesterday fined £5 for wilfully injuring a bull and ordered

to pay the value of the animal, £4, to the owner. Constable Evan stated that on visiting defendant's property he found that the animal's right eye Lad been shot out and after he destroyed the bull he found (it her wounds. The bull belonged to a neighbour and had wandered on to defendant's property. Milner had previously been lined at Ruatoria for a similar offence. Defendant stated that the owner of the bull had been previously warned. On this occasion he was in bed suffering from influenza and the only way he could protect some young heifers was to use a shotgun. Unfortunately he was only able to wound the bull, which wandered on the road and was dangerous to children. He could not drive the bull to the pound as he was still suffering from illness. The magistrate, Mr. E. L. Walton, in fixing the penalty, said defendant clearly had no right to do what he had done.
