SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

A large amount of routine business was transacted at the September meeting of the Northcoto Welfare Relief League. The reports showed that the work for which the league existed was being systematically undertaken. Mesdames J. Horan, F. Townshend and N. S. Davidson were added to the executive. Mrs. A. J. Beck presided.

In aid of the Takapuna Barnardo cot fund an afternoon concert was held in the grounds of Mrs. J. C. Buchanan's home, in Clifton Road, Takapuna, on Saturday. Scenes from Shakespeare were ■given by pupils of the Takapuna Grammar school under Miss Mawhinney, while a.toy symphony orchestra proved a great attraction. Songs were contributed by Mrs, Boman and Mrs. Henderson, Miss Peggy Howie and Miss Moyna Macken. Mr. H. Trill played a cornet solo.

I The final of its series of fortnightly progressive 500 evenings was held by the Mangere Bowling Club in its own pavilion on Saturday night, when there was a good attendance. Prizes for the beet aggregate scores for the season were presented to Mrs. A. Henwood and Mr. N. Mac Donald by "Mr. W. W. Massey, M.P., president of the club, who also presented the prizes to Mrs. A. E. Newson and Mr. W. R. Knight for the best ecores of the evening. Among those present were Mesdames. W. W. Massey, A. E. Newson, A. Henwood, W. A. Key, S. W. House, D. Nicholls, E. Knight, D. Penman, Smith, W. and-W. R. Knight, Misses B. Key, O. Olsen, V. McDonald.

A large number of dancers responded to the Takapuna Tennis Club's invitation to a dance at the Pirate Shippe on Saturday evening. The ship was brightly decorated with flowers and greenery, while the supper rooms were artistically arranged in the club's colours of black and white, with bowls of narcissi, anemones and ranunculi, sweet peas and Iceland poppies placed at intervals along the tables. The guests were received by Mrs. Eugene Sullivan, assisted by members of the ladies' and men's committees. An enjoyable five hundred evening was held on Tuesday evening at the residence of Captain J. McKinnon, Lawi rence Street, Hemp Bay. in aid of the Hawke Sea Scoute. Prizes were won by Mrs. Bowden, Mr. Holmes and Mrs. Hall. An enjoyable evening was held at the home of Mrs. Hedges, Sackville Street, Grey Lynn, on Saturday, when Mr. and Mrs. C. Porteous entertained friends in honour of the anniversary of the birthday of their son, Charles Porteous. Dancing and games were freely indulged in, and several of the guests rendered musical or vocal items. Tlie Epsom Croquet Club's season was opened on Saturday in brilliant sunshine, with the lawns in excellent condition. The presaident, Mrs. Walker, received her guests in a becoming suit of magpie crepe de chine. In a speech welcoming the visitors, Mrs. Walker wished the new members a happy time in the club. Miss Hasten, representing the parks committee of the City Council, spoke of the good will of her fellow members on the parks committee, and wished the club a successful season. She. asked Mrs. Walker to play tho first ball, and then declared the season open. On behalf of the committee, the vicepresident, Mrs. Jenkin, presented Mrs. Walker with a floral horseshoe in tho club colours. Progressive games were played, and prizes won by Mrs. H. Jones and Mrs. Chapman (A), Mrs. Scott and Mrs. Mynott (B). The pavilion and tea tables were tastefully decorated by Mrs. H. Collins, and an excellent tea party was dispensed by the members.

A surprise evening was given to Mies. Lai Paice at lier home, Balmoral Road, on Saturday evening by members of the friendship party. The programme was arranged by Mrs. Rogers, a special feature being the presentation of birthday gifts to Miss Edith Paice and Mr. Albert Moyle respectively. Sirs. Paice wore a gown of black lace and georgette. Mrs. Kogers was attired in black and cherry figured georgette. Musical items were given by Mrs. F. Fisher, Miss Alys Moneur, Mrs..C. Linden and Miss Lai Paice. Madam Humphrey Steward and Mr. Alex. McCarthy acted as accompanists. Competitions and games were much enjoyed. Among the guests were Mesdames Paice, Rogers, W. Edwards, J. A gala day, held by the fancy stall committee of the St. Joseph Parish Women's League, took place last Saturday in the Convent school grounds, Otahuhu, ax.d should considerably augment the funds for the forthcoming parish bazaar. Mesdames C. Hallworth (convener), J. J. Graham, J. Cahill, J. OToole, M. Berkhout, H. M. Ryan Misees Pat Horan, G. Fitzgerald, A. Underwood, J. AUanson, E. Hodgson and Messrs. C. Hallworth, R. Stack, N. Fleming and PI. M. Ryan were in charge of the various stalls, sideshows and sports. Valuable help was also rendered by the St. Joseph troop of boy scouts, under the leadership of Scoutmaster J. Lynch. As a finale to the afternoon a grand dance and euchre tournament was held in the evening in the school hall. Mrs. J. Gillies' orchestra supplied the dance music gratuitously, the orchestral stand representing a Maori whare with seven gailycoloured balloons hanging from the carved doorway. A popular extra was played by Mrs. W. Darby. Mrs. F. Fearnley and Airs. J. E. Gillies presented the prizes to i the various winners as follows:—Euchre, ladies, Mrs. M. Doyle 1. Mrs. F. White 2. Over 100 people were present at the Auckland Training College on Saturday afternoon in response to an open invitation of the principal of the college, Mr. D. M. Rae, to attend a. dance afternoon. The function was arranged with a view to encouraging an interest in the old English co.untry dances which are at present being revived in England, where performances are held in the eummer months in various parts of the country and in some of the parks of London. The proceedings were organised by Miss A. Kennedy and Miss Molly Searle, and t lie dancing took place on the lawn. Picturesque and graceful country dances were performed, including Helston Surry and Sellinger's Round, Gathering Peascods, Knfty Tufty, Picking Up Sticks, If All the World Were Paper and Black Mag, Old Mole, Jenny Pluck Pears, Indian Queen, Child Grove, Hey Boys! Sweet Cake, Fine Companion and Hunsdon House.

The annual bazaar and sale of work in connection with St. Margaret's Church took place in the Mission Hall, Mount Albeit, on Saturday, when the weather was ideal. Prior to opening the bazaar, tho vicar, Rev. R. Geo. Coats, addressed the- gathering and welcomed those present. He called upon Mrs. Clay (a former president) to open '.bo proceedings. Mrs. Clay epoke in high terms of the- valuable work done by the ladies of tho Guild, and wished them every success, and then declared the bazaar open. A feature of last year's results was that a substantial sum was raised towards the sinking fund of £-">G. Aβ one year's attempt this was considered most satisfactory. The various stalls were decorated by many willing workers. The following is a list of stallholders: Plain work stall, Mesdames Marshall, Woodheod, Runciman and Rice; cake stall, Mrs. Weaver, Mrs. Purehas, and Miss M. Jackson; flower stall, Mrs. W. H. Worrall, assisted by Miss Joan Weaver; fancy work, Mrs. Brook-Smith and tho Misses Livesey (2); sweet stall, Miss Andrews, assisted by G.F.S. girls; produce stall, Mrs. Lane and Mrs. Elliedonj tearooms, Mrs. Hailnkin and Mrs.; Wilson, assisted by Misses Lane, Alice I Murphy, Jean Caahmore, and Patty Brigham; dip tub, Miss Joan Wall work; ice. cream. Miss D. McCullough. Mrs. W. Brook-Smith was the energetic secretary.

The effort to raise funds for the Birkenhead dental clinic was brought to a clone on Saturday, when a carnival wae held in the Xortheote High School grounds, and was very largely attended. This was officially opened by Mr. F. B. Rice, 8.D.5., dental superintendent of the Auckland district for the Division of Dental Hygiene. Associated on the platform with him were Mr. R. A. Rew, representing the Auckland Education Board, Messrs. Xoel Campbell, Harry Shaw, W. E. Robert*, G.. C. Butt, L. J. Foley and X. Hopkins, representing the management committee of the Birkenhead dental clinic, with Miss M. 11. Mulholland, the dental nurse. The culmination of the school queen competition wae the coronation ceremony, the preparations for which had been entrusted to Miss Bettina Edwards, the mistress of the robes. The crowning took place of Mies Dorothy Foley, of Albany, ae queen of the carnival, attended .by Missee Joan Klingender (Glenfield), Sybil Norton (Birkenhead), Shirley Patterson (Birkdale), and Yolande Cross (Xortheote). The Auckland Girls' Brass Band, under Mr. Webber, played for the' march to at.d for the coronation, and the St. Andrew's Pipe Band played the procession off at the conclusion. The heralds were Mary Torrene and leobel Campbell; the lord chancellor, Douglas Shaw; chamberlain, Douglas Fernerj archbishop, James McGhie; knight, Angus Arblaster; page, Milton Hocking; bearers of cro.vn, sword, dove, cross, sceptre, jewel, scroll and standard were respectively Margaret Fletcher, Joan Borrows, Irene Saunders, Betty Seed, Mary Gardiner, Elaine Goad, Shirley Potter and Sydney Clemowj flower girls, Jill Coatcs, Frances Congdon, Kitty Anderson. Among other entertainers was Mr. F. Foley, whose lightning sketches, conjuring and ventriloquial items were greatly appreciated. The grounds were illuminated by electric light in the evening. The stallholders, drawn from the staffs and comnrttees of the various schools, had a busy time, and the High School girle did splendid work waiting on tables. Mrs. H. Shaw and her party organised the catering section.

A masked plain and fancy dre&p bal was held in the Henderson Town Hal on Monday night in aid of the Hender son School* Committee's funds, when the hall was so crowded that dancing was carried on with difficulty. The musii wae supplied by the school orchestra wearing uniforms in the school colours red and blue, under the direction of Mrs Livingstone, and extras were contributed by Mesdames A. Butler, R. Knipe. Xoble and Mr. J. Kipe. Mr. H. G. R Mason, M.P., in a short speech, complimented the committee upon its activities, and opened the ball with Miss A. Livingstone ae partner. Competitions were held, and the winners were:— Best couple, Mr. and Mrs. Ballingall, who represented a Spanish bride and bridegroom; most original costume, Mise Gilflllan, bowser pump; most humorous, Mrs. Harvey ae Mrs. Jiggs; best fancy dress, Mise G. Ansell, butterfly. Prizes were aleo awarded to Mr. F. Murphy, who wae dressed as a deeert chief; Mr. W. Williams, golliwog; Miss Jean Singer, peaepod; Mr, B. Scanlon, monkey; and Mr. Haslip, "better outlook on life." An excellent supper was provided, the arrangements being carried out by a social committee consisting of Mesdamee Steele, Lowe, Murphy, Melvin, Morrison, R. M. Hudson, Corbnn and Miss P. Ozich. The judges in the competitions were Mr. and Mrs. T. Q. Alpe and Mr. and Mrs. T. Stone. Among those present were: Meedames H. and R. NorcroeSj A. King-Mason, W. Sherer, Wallace, S. Ozich, Dawkins, G.
