MONEY NEEDED.
BRITISH LABOUR.
FRANK ADMISSION. • . Mr. Henderson's Remedy Greeted With Uproar. ASSOCIATE MEMBERS. (United P.A.—Electric Telegraph—Copyright'; (Received 12 noon.) LONDON, October 2. At the Labour Conference, Mr. Arthur Henderson moved an amendment to the constitution permitting the enrolment of associate members prepared to contribute funds, who were unable, for various reasons, actively to be associated with the party. He added that they were losing much assistance. An associate might include Government or municipal officials, shopkeepers, lawyers, clergymen, bank clerks and insurance officials.
The proposal met with considerable uproar and opposition. Mr. Henderson declared frankly that the party needed money. Mrs. Nichols, from Northampton, retorted : ashamed of avowing membership should stay outside." The motion was defeated on a card vote by 1,428,000 votes to 804,000. The result was greeted with loud cheering.
