PENALTIES FOR GAMBLING.

I noticed a protest against the unfair treatment meted out to Chinese who play fantan and pakapoo in their homes. I, too, wish to voice my protest in this matter. I think it disgraceful, to say the least, that the Chinese should 'be singled out in this conspicuous manner and heavily fined—even £70 was not too much to ask a first offender to pay the other day—for indulging in this '"illegal" practice, while the same thing is being done . nightly in private homes by Europeans. Is it not more than time that we ceased making lisli of one and fowl of another and saw to it that this '"British justice" of which we often boast is more rightly directed and justly administered? JUSTICE FOR ALL.
