RACING AT RANDWICK.

THE SECOND DAY.

METROPOLITAN HANDICAP.

WON BY REGAL SON. SYDNEY, October 2. The spring carnival of the Australian Jockey Club was continued to-day at Randwick in fine, warm weather, before an attendance of 45,000. Due to heavy rain during the week-end the track was sodden,' causing the scratching pen to. be freely used and the times in the various races to be slow.

The principal event, the Metropolitan, was decisively won by Regal Son, whose good second to Chatham in the Epsom Handicap on Saturday caused investors to take him into 6erious consideration. He was always prominent in the running and left the field at the Leger to win by three lengths from the favourite Topical, with Oro third. The top-weight Rogilla, 9.8, who won the Spring Stakes on Saturday, could make no impression and finished tired. ' •

The New Zealand horse Inflation, who failed in the Epsom, was considered to be favoured by the soft track and received strong support from his trainer, A. D. Webster, in the Metropolitan, but after showing up in the vanguard to the top of the straight, failed to come on, finishing fifth.

There was an exciting finish in the Breeders' Plate, Fashion Star finishing fast to beat Sun Clad, who tired when appearing certain to win. Fashion Star and the third horse St. Globe are both by Treelare.

Another desperate finish in the Centennial Park Handicap saw Aussie's Delight prevail by half a neck from J. E. Pike's mount Loch Garry. Dromos, owned by Mr. E. J. Watt, was third.

Mr. Watt had better luck in the next race, when his -sew Zealand-bred colt Waikare, brother to Agrion, won the Grantham Stakes in convincing style. He is trained by G. Price. The Auckland colt Deputy Ruler, who is in the same stable and who ran second to Hall Mark in the A.J.C. Derby, was one of the horses scratched for this event.

Waikare was the second New Zealandbred winner of the day, the first being the Limond mare Golden Gate, who scored a clear-cut victory from Yista and Golden Hair in the Shorts. Vista was ridden by the Xew Zealand horseman Roy Reed and Golden Hair is owned by Mr. G. F. Moore, of Kai Twi. Wangaiiui, so that the result bore a distinct Dominion appearance.

The Sydney apprentice J. M. O'Sullivan had a very successful day, winning the Metropolitan on Regal Son and the Squatters' Handicap on Dalmatic, besides running second on Dark Chief in the Grantham Stakes and third on St. Globe in the Breeders' Plate. ....
