HOME TO INDIA.
HUNDREDS LEAVE FIJI.
SAVINGS EXCEED £24,000.
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
SUVA, September 16.
Coming to Fiji with nothing, or, as some put it, with "less than nothing," as they had borrowed money to buy their scanty outfit, 475 Indians (young and okl) sailed for their homeland by the steamer Ganges, most of them taking substantial sums in drafts or in goods. None was allowed to take away more than £2 in cash, but in all they took away over £24,000.
There were some amusing scenes at the wharf as Indians tried to dodge the Customs officers. "How much 6ilver have you?" they were asked, and invariably came the pat reply, "Two shillings," but none admitted he had over the regulation sum of £2. Indian boy scouts -were present assisting the officials in carrying baggage on board or in keeping the crowd moving. Strange and varied was the luggage, some carrying their all in mats, others using kerosene tins with home-made handles, while a few sported real modern suitcases. All were excited and happy.
