NEW SLEEPERS.
CARS FOR EXPRESSES
FROM OTAHyHU WORKSHOPS
Two new and improved "de luxe" sleeping cars have been delivered to the Auckland station yards from the Otahuhu workshops and will make their first trip 011 the Main Trunk line this week. Owing to the extra demand made on the number of sleepers r.t present in use since the opening of the "w Plymouth direct service from Auckland, the building of the coaches was completed at an opportune time, and they will provide a greater reserve of this type of car for express running. No further ears of this design are under construction.
Several improvements have been incorporated in the new cars. Each is divided into 10 berths, an upper and a lower in each compartment, and the usual washrooms. Over the door of each compartment is a stencilled electrically-lighted indication of the two berth numbers of the compartment, and on the corresponding doors are the same numbers, outlined in tinv reflecting mirrors. Inside the compartments extended luggage space has bi f 1 provided. Another no? 1 "* e improvement is the provision of pneumatic mattresses for the berths, which, with the well-sprung bogeys below and the roller-bearings, aim to make travelling as free from vibration as is possible. The berths are covered with a new material rather similar to imitation tapestrv. The colour of the clotli is quiet, without being dull. The customary reading lights, pilot lights and dome light are installed, hot and cold water are connected, and steam-heating or electric fan may be turned 011 at will.
