MR. T. C. CLISSOLD APPOINTED

WAR AND ANTARCTIC SERVICE

Out of 129 applications, Mr. T. C. Clissold has been appointed traffic inspector for the No. 2 highways district, at a commencing salary of £200 a year, in succession to Mr. E. IT. Barrett.

Mr. Clissold, who is 45 years of age, lives at Onehunga, and at present is attached to the Public Works Department at Auckland as a plant overseer, jn which capacity he has performed considerable motor vehicle inspection service for the Transport Department. Educated at St. Paul's School, Kent, England, he is a competent motor and general engineer, fitter and turner, with extensive knowledge of all makes of motor vehicles and stationary internal combustion engines and their operation, maintenance- and repair. For over two years he was in charge of the upkeep and maintenance of all motor transport vehicles and stationary internal combustion engines for Armstrong Whitworth, Ltd., during the Arapuni construction, and later was employed by the firm of John Burns, Ltd., as an erector. In 1927 he joined the Public Works Department as a plant overseer at Auckland. Jlr. Clissold also had considerable experience with the inspection of omnibuses under the Motor Omnibus Traffic Act, and as an inspector of passenger vehicles.

During four years' service with the Imperial forces in France, Mr. Clissold was for two and a half years in charge of repairs and maintenance of all motor transport for general headquarters, Koyal Air Force. Between 1910 and 1913 he served with the late Captain Scott in the British Antarctic Expedition as a member of the shore party for the Polar journey. In his diary ("Scott's Last Expedition," Vol. 1) Scott speaks very highly of Air. Clissold's mechanical abilities.

Native labour is so cheap in the Transvaal now that farmers are hiring labourers at 1/ a month and 31b of mealies a day. Even at this price they got more natives than required.
