NORTH SHORE WATER.

At present three water schemes are under consideration for the North Shore boroughs, but it is the general considered opinion that the Wairau scheme is the one that appeals least to those, who have made a close study of this matter over a. long period, of years. The offer by the City Council is. the one that at present is being considered by the Northcote, Birkenhead and, I believe, Takapuna, councils. This offer has established the fact that it is possible to obtain good water from an entirely new source at a satisfactory price and with "no difficulty in delivery. Why the offer made by the company prepared to deliver water from the Waikato has not been fully considered is remarkable. True, the company has not yet got the requisite charter from the Government, but this is being brought before the House of Representatives, and the bill ought to receive the backing of the North Shoro boroughs, as it opens up the way to competition, and will thus not allow the Auckland City Council to monopolise the water supply of the districts concerned. If the contract at present submitted by the Auckland City Council was signed by the boroughs concerned to-day, it would be impossible to have the water delivered for this summer, so that undue haste is not to bo commended till the Waikato scheme has been duly considered. At the last meeting of the Northcote Borough Council the Mayor seemed in a hurry to adopt the Auckland City Council scheme, and made sarcastic references to the Waikato scheme. Other members of the council, however, although not in full possession of the details of the company's offer, were ieen to receive further information, and it is to be trusted that they will not let this natter drop.
