"HARDLY A BOOKIE."

RELIEF WORKER FINED. "He can hardly be termed a 'bookie.' as his double was only 10/ to 3d," said Mr. Bryce Hart in the Polire Court this morning, when he appeared for Robert Leonard Beckham, who pleaded guilty to a charge of carrying on the business of a bookmaker on September 22.

Detective-Sergeant O'Sullivan said Beckham, when arrested on Friday last on a charge of drunkenness, was found to have in his possession a small homemade double chart. When spoken to by Detective Moore he was quite frank and admitted that he had been making up small doubles. He had never been in trouble before.

Mr. Hart said Beckham was a relief worker, and asked the magistrate to deal leniently with him.

Defendant wa.s fined £2 and was allowed one week in which to pay.
