GRAND CITY SOLD.

HORSES AT MATAMATA.

LAST LAP IN WORK. GIGANTIC AND PRINCE VAL. Grand City, who ran prominently in a couple of events last season, has been sold by Mr. W. Walker to two Matamata sportsmen, and has been placed in R. Martin's charge. This gelding was only out of work for a few weeks, so that it should not be lons before he is fit to race. Plans for Valpeen have been changed, and lie was on the track this week. It is intended to race the gelding in the Hunt Club Cup at Cambridge. Last Lap, who was turned out after the Rotorua Hunt meeting, is in R. Martin's stable and in work again. He will not be required until mid-summer. The brown gelding by Lapidary—Cherry in W. J. McLean's stable, is making satisfactory progress and should come to hand early. His essays over short distances recently have been quite satisfactory. m Lia Fail, the Chief Ruler youngster in J. W. Cathro's stable, is showing improvement, although still a bit on the big side. This is a very free mover, and is one of the most taking of the newcomers to the Matamata track. Lia Fail will probably be nominated for the Taumarunui meeting at Paeroa. W. Hennessey is working steady improvement in Pound Sterling, The Ace— Marble Star youngster owned by Mrs. N. Hastings. Pound Sterling is well engaged in the classics, and present intentions are to race him at Auckland in November.

Gigantic and Prince Val continue to go along the right way, and should be racing prominently shortly. The programme for the former' is not definite, but Prince Val will probably be nominated for Wellington and Auckland. The consistent Lady Lulu is not to be persevered with and is to be sent to Speardance. The source of the ailment which came against Lady Lulu w,as difficult to trace and was recurring. Valcuir, who was one of the most promising hacks in these parts some two seasons back, has been handed to R. J. Mateer for training. When Valcuir was turned out it was on account of soreness, but he appears to be quite sound again. He is carrying plenty of surplus condition, and will certainly not be ready until the country circuit after Christmas.

Whistling Rnfus is to be nominated for flat races at Taumarunui and Waikato Hunt meetings. While this gelding moves freely in his work, his form is nothing to enthuse over and it may be a while before he is at his best.

Emancipation, Sir Musk, Sir Pathfinder. Merry Lap. First Dance, Poi Dance and Woodful are anions those doing serviceable work.
