INTER-ISLAND CONTEST.
THE SOUTHERN PI FT KEN. FONG IS NOT IN THE TEAM. (By Telegraph.—Special to " Star.") CHRISTCHURCH, this clay. Team selected by Messrs. Peter Harvey (Christchurcli) and Alan Adams (Greymouth) to represent the South Island against the North in the annual interisland match to be played in Wellington on Saturday week:— Full-back.—J. Grainger (North Otago).. Three-quarters.—G. F. Hart (Canterbury), H. Smith (Otago), W. T. Dunne (Otago). Five-eighths.—C. J. Oliver (Canterbury), R. Hazelhurst (Canterbury). Half-back. — R. B. Scandrett (West Coast). Forwards—A. I. Cottrell (Canterbury), J. Hore (Otago), L. George (Southland), J. F. Manchester (Canterbury), D. Max (Nelson), G. Purdue (Southland), A. H. Andrews (Canterbury), T. F. Metcalfe (Southland). Reserves.—E. C. Holder (Buller), R. R. King (West Coast),. One of the surprises is the omission of A. S. Fong, the West Coast Chinese skipper, who, curiously enough, was the only second iivecighth nominated by any union. While his defence was unquestioned, it was considered that he did not meet requirements as a connecting link with the three-quarter line. Charlie Oliver, the New Zealand international cricketer —he is also an All Black —is certain to lead the Southerners again, as he did at Christchurcli last year when North won 28 —10 (G. A. Bullock-Douglas scoring five tries for the winners).
