Paterson, S.M. morning Robert James Brydon, aged 5™ with many' aliases,' appeared -on'nini charges, mainly, of obtaining money and goods by false-pretences 'and of being rogue and vagabond. The offences wefs alleged to have been committed at Roto.rua, Ngaruawahia and Hamilton'.'Accuses wae charged with cashing a cheque -at : - Ngaruawahia . for £1 15/11, and with ■ having negotiated- at Hamilton' chequk' worth £27 6/. At Rotorua, it was alleged■ he tendered cheques.for various and offered one to C. R. Tapper, aboard-? ing house proprietor, for £10. ■ *i The proprietor, became suspicious went to the bank. Meantime, accused idie.i appeared and also tried to cash a 'ch'e.m#i for £8 with the , proprietor of a privifi! hotel, but failed. •'• ■■-'''■'«:iij Brydon had a list-of 29 convictions''! dating from 1905. He had been to terms of imprisonment totalling ,oW' 34 years, some of the sentences "befiiif ' concurrent, and had been twice''declared'! an habitual criminal. ; Twice he escap'sil! from custody and was on license as'■**! habitual criminal when the last tiffencee;i were.committed. : ~ ',•.;, On the first charge of vagrancy accused wae already serving three months.'
