PROTECTING NATURAL BEAUTY.

Since the Waitemata County Council has an exceptional amount of bush land and treefringed coast in its territory—probably more than any other local body in or around Auckland —there is more than usual interest in the strong stand it is taking , against destruction of native trees. Its attitude, however, is of interest to all parts of the country. The pohutukawas that fringe the Manukau's beaches merit all the protection that can be given to them, but so do pohutukawas on the Waitemata side and round the Gulf and along the coast. The New Zealand Institute of Horticulture is to be congratulated on moving in this matter, and the Waitemata County Council on being so determined to preserve Tiative trees. Thoughtlessness as well as pure selfishness is responsible for damage to trees —there is, for example, the holiday-maker who lights a fire against a pohutukawa trunk or root —and education as well as enforcement of the law is required for the preservation of Nature. Fortunately, knowledge and appreciation of native flora are growing in the community generally, and it should not be difficult to stamp out this aspect of bad citizenship.
