FARMERS AND RATES.
NON-PAYMENT ABVOOACY. (By Teleßi-aph.—Own Correspondent.) HAMILTON, this day. Once again the knotty question of payment or non-payment of rates came up for discussion at a meeting of the Waikato sub-provincial executive of the Farmers* Union yesterday. It was decided to refer the matter of derating of farm lands to the Central Derating Committee, which will meet next month. "Do we intend to pay up this year or make a stand ?" asked Mr. J. H. Furnies, who presided. He added that the- meeting could only make recommendations to the central committee. * Mr. A. E. Robinson, provincial secretary, said resolutions favouring the nonpayment of rates had been passed in many districts, biit lately there had been a reversal of opinion. Mr. R. H. Feisst (Cambridge) considered constitutional action was the best policy. One line of action lay in the direction of electing county councillors who favoured derating. Personally he considered economic pressure would be more effective. Mr. Furnies: I do not regard it as unconstitutional to refuse to pay rates.
