POINTS FROM LETTERS.
ENGLISH TRAINS. Ee the French "new train invention," and the comment by "D.W.8." in a recent "Star," I can go a little further by adding personal experiences 35 years and more back. In 1898, after exhibiting a hox'se at one of the West of England shows, I had an appointment with him in Windsor. To keep this the Great Western Railyay permitted me to have attached a horse box to the "slip" coach, which was "slipped" at Slough station, and thence taken by "ordinary" the '2% miles to Windsor. The first train finished the remaining 20 miles, to London in 18 minutes. Before that date, at the same station, Slough, by special permission, I took a moving picture of a train going at the same rate and dropping and picking up mails, without slowing. I have a part of that cinemato- : graph film hero now, very slightly different to present-day silent pictures. The camera I used was my own construction. I have been in New Zealand 33 years, and long before that saw the ' Home railway engines take up water going full epeed on long non-stop runs. . WM. A. FOUNTAIN.
