RECONSTRUCTION PARAGRAPH.
SOLUTION TO PUZZLE. Below is printed the correct solution to the Reconstruction Paragraph puzzle which was published in the Budget a fortnight. ago:— The Irish monks had a rare and peculiar genius in the illumination of manuscripts—the earliest art of the British Isles—and they set the Scottish and English monks working in their way. The book of Keils is the outstanding work of Irish genius and among others produced in our country under their influence is the famous Lindisfarne manuscript, now in the British Museum. After a time the English illuminators developed characteristics of their own. From about the tenth to the fifteenth centuries their work was more important than any other of its class throughout Europe. During this period came the greatest disaster that ever happened' to medieval art and letters in England—the Black Death. The population of the country at that time, 1384, was between four and five millions—about two-thirds the size of London to-day —and of these about one half died of the plague.
