STEADY COMPETITION.
Competition was steady and values for ox beef were firm at late rates at the fat stock sales to-day. There was a slight improvement in the prices for cow and heifer beef.
The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, report:— To-day at our weekly Westfield fat stock market beef was penned in average numbers. There was a steady demand, with ox beef selling at late rates. Cow and heifer beef met with a ready demand, with values very firm, and in some eases better value. Extra choice ox sold to 18/ per 1001b; choice and prime ox, 15/6 to 17/; ordinary and plain ox, 13/ to 15/; prime young cow and heifer beef, 15/ to 17/; ordinary cow beef, 10/ to 14/. No extra heavy prime steers were penned. Heavy prime steers, £0 to £7 2/6; lighter, £5 to £5 17/6; light, £4 to £4 17/6; unfinished and small, £2 to £3 17/6; extra heavy prime young cows and heifers, £5 to £5 10/; heavy, £4 to £4 17/6; lighter, £3 5/ to £3 17/6; light, £2 10/ to £3 2/6; other cows, £1 5/ to £2 of.
Alfred Buckland and Sons, Limited, report:'—
To-day at our weekly Westfield fat stock market we yarded 193 head, as against 213 last week. These comprised 109 steers and 84 cows and heifers. Competition was steady throughout. Values for steers were firm at last week's quotations. Cows and heifers showed an improvement. Extra choice ox sold to 18/ per 1001b; choice and prime ox, 15/ to 17/; secondary and plain ox, 12/6 to 14/; prime y6ung cow and heifer beef, 13/ to 16/; ordinary cow beef, 9/6 to 12/. No extra heavy prime steers were yarded. Heavy prime steers, £7 5/ to £7 15/; lighter, £5 17/6 to £7; light, £4 15/ to £5 12/6; unfinished and small, £3 15/ to £4 12/6: extra heavy prime young cows and heifers, £5 to £5 10/; heavy, £4 to £4 15/; lighter, £3 12/6 to £3 17/6; killable cows, £1 15/ to £3 7/6.
Dalgety and Company, Limited, report: To-day at our weekly Westfield fat stock market ox beef was penned in less than average numbers, but sold under a steady demand at values on a par with last week's quotations. Cow and heifer beef came forward under average numbers and a steady demand resulted in values at late rates firming more toward the close of the sale. Extra choice ox sold to 18/ per 1001b; choice and prime ox, 15/ to 17/; killable,' 12/ to 14/; prime young cow and' heifer beef, 14/ to 17/; just killable cow beef, 10/ to 13/. No extra heavy prime I steers were yarded. Heavy prime steers, I £6 2/6 to £6 10/; lighter, £5 7/6 to .£6; : light, £4 to.£s 5/: unfinished and small,. £2 10/ to £3 17/6; extra heavy prime] young cows and heifers, £5 2/6 to £5 10/; heavy, £4 5/ to £5; lighter, £3 5/ to £4 2/6; killable cows, £1 10/ to £3. Calves were yarded in more than average numbers. A fairly steady sale resulted in values a little easier than last week's quotations. Runners, £1 5/ to £2 10/. No extra prime runners were penned. Heavy vealers, £2 4/ to £2 9/; medium, £1 15/ to £2 2/.; light, £1 6/ to £1 12/; small, 18/ to £14/; rough calves, 5/ to 13/; small and fresh dropped, 3/ to 8/.
