HIT SAFETY ZONE.
MOTORIST UNFIT TO DRIVE. COMMERCIAL MAN FIXED £15. A manufacturers' representaive, Donald Chamberlain Ilaberfield, aged '-7, appeared before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court this morning, when he pleaded guilty to a charge of being in a state of intoxication while in charge of a motor car in Queen Street. Mr. A. Hall Skelton appeared for accused. Detective-Sergeant O'Sullivan said that at 12.50 this morning, while in Queen Street, Constable Jamicson heard a crash. Looking round, he noticed that Ilaberliehl's car had collided with the safety zone near Fort Street. Ilaberfield drove into Sbortland Street, and 011 alighting from hits car the constable could see that ho had had liquor. A doctor was summoned and examined ; Ilaberfield, and certified that accused ; was not in a'fit condition to drive his , car. Mr. Hall Skelton said Ilaberfield ( represented a big Christchurch linn, and | travelled all over the Dominion in a < motor car. Last night, he had been playing bridge with friends, and had drunk , some stout. He did not have very much, j but as ho was not used to stout it may have affected him slightly. "He drove a | friend down to the ferry wharf, and was quite all right then," added counsel. "The collision with the safety zone was caused by one of the tyres blowing out. lie was not drunk. He has never been | in trouble of any kind previously." The magistrate lined Ilaberfield £15, or one month's imprisonment, and endorsed his driver's license.
