VETERAN JOURNALIST.
NEW ZEALANDER PASSES. (Received 10.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, this day. The death has occurred at Maroubra of Mr. Joseph J. Smith, a veteran New Zealand journalist, at the age of 74. He founded the old "YVairarapa Star," and was prominent in New Zealand Masonic circles. The late Mr. Smith was born at Wellington, Shropshire, England, and came to New Zealand in 1864 in the ship Sir William Eyre. He was apprenticed to the proprietor of the "Wairarapa Mercurv," and later entered into partnership with Mr. A. W. Hogg, then M.P.. in 1881, founding the "Wairarapa Star. At the same time the firm was proprietor of the "Weekly Star," the "South Wairarapa Advocate," and the "Eketahuna and Pahiatua Mail." THEATRICAL PROMOTER. DEATH OF MR. CHARLES TAIT. SYDNEY, June 27. The death has occurred of Mr. Charles Tait, aged 02. He was the eldest of the well-known theatrical brothers and was regarded as the founder of the family's fortune. Otherwise he was a silent partner. Mr. Tait brought out to Australia and New Zealand the Besses o' the Barn Band, Dame Clara Butt, Dame Nellie Melba, Kreislcr, Paderewski and John McCormack. NEW EVENING PAPER. PUBLICATION IN MELBOURNE. (Kcccivcd 0.30 a.m.) MELBOURNE, this day. The Argus Australasian Proprietary announces its intention to begin the publication of a new evening paper called "Tho Star," in the early part of November. n his will be the second evening paper for Melbourne.
