GOLD PROSPECTING.

METHODS OUTLINED. ADDRESS BY DR. MARSDEN. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WAIHI, this day. At the invitation of the Waihi School of Mines en instructive lecture on geophysical prospecting was delivered last evening by Dr. E. Marsden, Secretary of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. There was a large attendance. A welcome was extended by Mr. W. H. Johnston, president of the school council, and by the Mayor, Mr. W. M. Wallnutt, as chairman of the Waihi Prospecting Association. Dr. Marsden reviewed the applicability of the various methods of geopliyics in detecting underground structures bearing directly upon the physical properties of strata and material. These included four methods, magnetic, seismic, electrical and gravitational in nature. Geophysical prospecting indicated the best places for boring, but did not directly detect gold, and was carried out in conjunction with data pro\idcd by the geologist. The lecture was illustrated by a series of lantern slides, including interesting views of mining on alluvial deposits in the Cromwell district, Otago. At the conclusion of the lecture Dr. Marsden was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. As a result of the interest shown in geophysical research Dr. Marsden will be invited later by the School of Mines and the Prospecting Association to conduct gcophvsical tests covering likely localities outside the actual area explored by the Waihi Company's workings, with a* view to determining whether definite ore bodies exist in the immediate vicinity of Waihi.
