DUNEDIN, Tuesday.
As a result of inquiries conducted by Detective-Scrgcant H. Nuttall, the arrest was made of a young man, William John Jardine, at Balclutha on Monday morning. Ho appeared in the Balclutha Police Court to-day on a charge of breaking and entering the Balclutha railway station 011 April 18. On the application of Detective-Sergeant Nuttall, Jardine was remanded to appear at Balclutha 011 July 5. The police stated that other charges would be preferred against him. On the morning after the ofTence at the railway station, it was found that the house of the stationmaster, Mr. W. C. CunlifTe, had been entered and a search made of the pockets of Mr. Cunlifre's clothes for the keys of the station. This proving unsuccessful, the intruder had gone to the house of Mr. N. Wilkinson, booking clerk at the station, and had conducted a similar search there, securing the keys of two small safes at the station. The station building had then been entered by forcing the front door and the safe had been opened. Although it had contained about £12 in money, nothing was removed.
