AIDING RELIEF MEN.
i METROPOLITAN COMMITTEE. DISTRIBUTION OF BOOTS. Since tlie last mooting of the Auckland Metropolitan Unemployment Relief Committee 271 pairs of boots had been distributed. Of the number 10L pairs were given free, 140 pairs were sold at half cost to campers, and .'SO pairs at half cost to men on relief in the metropolitan area. Since May !) of last year the committee had distributed (103.!) pairs, 3*238 at half cost, and 2797 free to men iu camps. These lignres were supplied in the report presented at the committee's meeting yesterday, when the Mayor, Mr. G. W. Hutchison, presided. The report also showed that since the last meeting, the depot had distributed 821 blankets," (508 pairs of denims, 7(>S ehirts, 312 singlets, 13(54 pairs of socks, and 113 pairs of underpants. In addition f)(>8 pairs of boots or shoes had been received for repairs. A statement of accounts for tlie past fortnight showed a total expenditure of i £S(SO, which caused the Mayor to remark ' that as the committee had only £1700 i in hand the amount would run out in a month. I Mr. W. Slaughter said that after the ' coming two weeks men going into camps, would 1)0 provided with a pair of boots free from the Labour Department, which would mean a saving to the committee of about £(50 a week. The only boots the committee would be called on to supply after the next fortnight would he to men who had been in camp six months or more, and for these the cominittcc would receive half cost. The ITelensvillc Women's Institute wrote stating that it would hold an anniversary day oil duly ■!, when each of the 108 members, would bring a gift for the poor of Auckland. The secretary to the trustees of the Governor-General s winter relief fund, Wellington, wrote stating that a jam manufacturing firm had given 2-">0 tins of jam per month for three months, and another firm had given £2.') worth of woollen goods, and there had also been a gift of firewood. The donations were for distribution in Auckland.
