TOM HEENEY.
Concerning a fund for Hccncv, who has lately fallen a victim of bad times, "Wanderer's" remarks concerning Bob Fitzsimmons (who, I might mention, was not a New Xealander) seem to me totally irrelevant. Further, his aspersions upon Heeney's boxing capabilities are, I consider, incorrect. I will not detail Tom's activity overseas; suffice to |say that his draw with Sharkey (present world's champion), who had very nearly upset Dempsey's calculations, earned for him a match with Tunnev. Sharkey was not a second-rate fighter, as "Wanderer" suggests. It is obvious that mere ability to absorb punishment would not have led Heeney to a title match. Apart from his prowess altogether, Heeney did * great deal in placing. New Zealand "'on the map." He entered the ring against Tunney wearing a Maori mat, .thus bringing before tho eyes of the world, through the medium of newspaper reports, etc., our country and our Maori population. For this reason, I think New Zealand owes something to "Honest Tom," and am sure that all sportsmen would be willing to contribute to a fund. SPORTSMAN.
