WOOL MARKETING.
BETTER METHODS NEEDED. (To the Editor.), Mr. Talbot Hay ward has inferred that bccause I happen to be> a public accountant I should therefore have no knowledge of wool marketing. His own letter would give the impression that he is not conversant even with present-day marketing systems. If Mr. Hayward will'advise me how he has been associated with the wool industry for so many years greater respect for his criticism could be felt. He* mentions that it is impossible, owing to the various types of wool, for manufacturers., buyers and consumers to buy without seeing it* in bulk quantities. Is lie aware at the present time that New Zealand is very far behind other countries already selling wool to*true-typo "samples"; If he is not aware of this it is futile for him to make any comment along the lines ho mentions. No buyer, under the present method of marketing, sees tlio wool lie is buying in its entirety, whereas if correctly marketed, lio would know the true contents of each bale. Mr. Hayward says it is impossible to market wool in a similar manner as butter and other produce. The only comparison lie could possibly make between butter marketing and the present method of selling wool would be if our dairy farmers were compelled to forward to ports their cream in barrels, and after inspection, without tests, have the same shipped overseas, and manufactured into butter at its destination. Based on Mr. Hay ward's _ criticism, is it out of place to suggest that it is possible that the men who are leaders with regard to efficient butter marketing are personally unable to make a pound of butter? Practical men with expert knowledge and long experience are fortunately procurable both in New Zealand and abroad, and will give effect to better marketing methods, as I have already proved. Mr. Hayward's statement that "to prepare the condition of wool before offering is the only manner in which to get its truo value, and* that this should be done by expert men under expert supervision,'' is correct and part of my programme.
