PUKEKOHE AFFAIRS.

AUCKLAND HOSPITAL LEVY.

WATER SUPPLY IMPURE. The Pukekohe Borough Council met on Wednesday evening, the. Mayor, Mr. John Routly, presiding. The Auckland Hospital Board advised that the borough's share of the administration levy for 1933-34 was £865 12/8. The levy last year was £863 7/4. The medical officer of health, Auckland, reported that a bacteriological examination of a sample of Pukekohe water showed the presence of bacilli coli in 100 cubic centimetres. The matter was referred to the turncock and health inspector. Revised charges for electricity from street lighting and pumping, agreed to •between sub-committees of the council and Power Board, were ratified. The Mayor reported that owing to insufficient work offering and to avoid throwing members of the outside staff on to the unemployed register, arrangements had been made between the men and the foreman to ration the work. The arrangements were working satisfactorily. The Mayor's honorarium was fixed at £100, although Mr. Routly suggested a reduction of 20 per cent. The council considered that the amount was little enough in view of the saving the Mayor effected to the borough in the laying out

of works.
