RACEHORSE DESTROYED.

END OF BEAU CAVALIER,

A BRILLIANT JUMPER.

The well-known steeplechaser, Beau Cavalier, lias been destroyed. His owner, Mr. A. G. Quartley, stated this morning that for some time past the horse had been suffering from what two veterinary surgeons considered a stroke, and other expert opinion a severe strain, but they were of opinion that he was in no pain. His owner had had him attended to for some considerable time, with the idea that lie might improve and end his declining days in peace and comfort. However, as he ligd not shown an improvement, Mr. Quartley, piueh against inclination, thought it would be more merciful to destroy him.

Beau Cavalier was purchased for £55 in 1920 by Mr. Quartley for use as an officer's charger, and he became one of the most brilliant jumpers that New Zealand has produced. He won the Great Northern Steeplechase, the Great Northern Hurdle Race, the Wellington Steeplechase and the Grand National Steeplechase, besides other events, his total earnings being upwards of 7000 sovs.
