SATURDAY'S ROAD RACES. FIXTURES. Saturday, June 17.—Open 20-Mllc Senior, Open Junior Rmre o£ J Miles. Sunday, June 16. —Meet L,ynnilale Grounds, t).4.'i a.m. Saturday, June 2-i.—Papatoetoe Club's Open i<ace. The bright sunshine of last Saturday encouraged 37 members of the Manukau Amateur Cycling Club to indulge in a little more strenuous exercise over the, club's hilly testing ground out at Avondale South. The juniors raced over an extended distance of 10 miles, and despite the doubled distance only one retired. Nine started. Garry Leonard, a tall youtli with distinct promise ot making good, made newcomer A. W. J. Brumby (.4.0) look slow in the sprint. Leonard used a free wheel, and rode off 3.15, to clock 31.43. Lapping out well for the four laps, George Holland and L. C. Craddock gav'e scratch junior Eddie Hansen just a bit too" hard a task. Holland beat his team mate in the sprint to collect fastest time in 30.42, which was 7s better than Hansen's figures. Hansen had a lone ride, so performed well considering. A course record field of 28 seniors started in the 15-miler. it was a good fast training ride for most of the number. C. C. Beart and S. McLellan, both off 5.0, gave a good exhibition of pacing work, and their combined efforts gave them first and second places respectively. Beart rode with the Manukau juniors in 1929 at Mangere, where he won a 5%-miler off 1.40 on October 5 of that year. For three seasons he stood down, so it ie pleasing to yee him shaping so well just after hie re-entry into competitive work. S. McLellan has been placed in the last two events. He is short and thick set in build, and is just getting into winning form.
A big surprise was furnished by Edgar F. Raper off 2.15. Raper finished third and fasteet in 41.55. He started off his mark with five others, and the pace was on all the way. His ride was only 51s slower than Gordon's record, and the southei - ly breeze on the hill at the back of the circuit made for hard going. Raper won three junior races in succession laet road eeason. He is a big chap. No Manukau senior has secured more than one fastest time in a club event this year. It will be interesting to see who will be the first to score the honour twice. Les. Dwight, John Brown, Ron Foubieter and Raper are in the running. On Saturday week, June 24, the Papatoetoe Chib is conducting an open race of 30 miles to Clcvedon, and entries close on Monday next. The course is , a fast and popular one. Riders will be pleased to learn that the next centre race will be over the old Kunieu course , , and will start and finish at "Western Springs. In their own interests, riders are reminded to retire on to the footpath after crossing the line at the finish, and so try and avoid any traffic obstructions. Should good conditions prevail, Tvan Laloli's record of lh 57m 30a should be given a knock.

FIXTURES. Safurdav, June 17. —Open Race. Manukau. Saturday, June 24.—25-Mlle Time Trial, Sealed Handicap.
Cold but fine weather, with a nippy southerly- wind, greeted cyclists when they rode last Saturduy, and times generally were comparatively slow. The Lynndale Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club held its usual club race on their circuit at New Lynn, being an 18%miler, three laps. Only a small field of eight faced the starter, as several of the others have had mishaps with their bikes. Several of the riders met with mishaps on the day. Both V. Harris and C. May punctured on their first lap, and E. W. Bates crashed on the top of the big hill. He was ably attended to by the St. John Ambulance representative, who has recently been allocated to this branch of sport. A. F. Johnson also retired after completing one lap. E. L. G. Hughes, a newcomer to the club distinguished himself for hie first ride by gaining first and fastest time. Off the 2.15 mark he rode a lone race from start to finish to clock 59.34.
L. Roberts, on the X.30 mark, also rode a lone ! race after his co-marker, A. F. Johnson, retired. He gained second place and third fastest, hie time being 60.58. He is showing improvement with each ride. C. Gooder was third with second fastest in 00.17. He did not seem to show hie usual dash. B. B. Scott, off 1.0, had trouble with his front brake, causing him delay, which cost him fastest time. His time was 61.17 3-5. Next Saturday Lynndale riders will meet at the Manukau course at 1.30 p.m., while on the Sunday they will piny the Manukau members' at a game of Rugby. All Lynndale's members are requested to be there sharp on time. The following club race will, be a_ 25milo time trial, with a sealed handicap in conjunction. Members will draw for positions, and start at half-minute intervals.
TAKAPUNA AMATEURS.
This club's twelfth road race of the season was of 22 1 A miles, and had as trophy the King Cup. All finishing riders clocked in within one minute of the winner, another striking feature being the splendid effort made by the juniors, who were successful in claiming the first four placings. ■ B. Sharp, off scratch, in company with S. Laurence and D. Lydford, rode steadily to drop the former in the first and'the latter in the fifth lap, and to set a new six lap record and receive time honours in 59 - 34 - r „ *, Other placinge were as follow:—M. Laurie, off 12.0, first, time 70.0; P. Bpwden, from the same mark, -second, time 70.1; A. Chaplin, off 8.0, third, time 66.8; O. McKee, off 6.0, fourth, time 64.15. L. Dick, showing a steady improvement in his lap times, was the first senior to cross the line and was closely followed by the rest of the field. Laurie and Bowden, from the limit mark, made the most of each other and their handicaps, and in the first four laps tailed to show more than a second's variation in their-times, but found the distance telling in the final two and slowed somewhat. Bowden got a slight break on Laurie just before entering the straight, but it was
not enough, to be of any use, Laurie coming up very fast to take the decision by a wheel.
McKee and Chaplin both made a great effort to overhaul the limit men. McKee, after shaking Jones off, finished with a brilliant burst of epeed, but just failed to catch Chaplin, who appears to be getting back the form he showed frequently earlier in the season.
The next club event will be held on Saturday, when one of the selected "new" courses will be given a try-out. The distance will be 22% miles, twice over the circuit which is. roughly, around the lake, to Birkenhead, home through Kauri Gully, finishing with the usual 3V4 miles of the old course. This run embraces a couple of steady climbs and will certainly give the riders a chance to gain experience on the rougher roads and. lulls. The juniors will race in an 11%-miler of the lake circuit. Eiders who intend to participate in the club ran (around the harbour) next Sunday, are reminded to meet at Hall's Corner at 10 a.m.
Saturday's handicaps declared by Mr, Gallagher are as follow; — Seniors. —B. Sharp, ecr; A. Lydford, S. Laurence, 30s: O. Durbin. G. Touart, W. Nash, 1.30; B. Oliver, L. Coleman. B. Evans, 2.0; A. Grant, M. Morrison, 3.0; AV. Pearce, G. Evans, 6.0; L. Dick, 10.0; T. Maloney, 12.0. Juniors. —R. Jonos, O. McKee, scr; A. Chaplin, 455: W. Johnson, 1.0; M. Hathaway, 1.15; M. Laurie, P. Bowden, 1.30.
PAPATOETOE AMATEUR CLUB
On Saturday the club had 17 starters in the race over 10 miles. This was held over a course of three laps. In the first lap the front men bunched, and riding etrongly set the backmarkers a formidable task. Nine turned the corner to figure in the finish, and in a tussle for positions E. Morrie and H. Bellini were unlucky in being brought down. A. Vazey sprinted home very strongly to record his first win. He has made marked improvement lately, and should soon be on the winning list again. L. Foubieter showed that he possesses the family ability by coming in a close second. This was his first start with the club this season. O. White, who was third, is one of the unlucky ones, as he goes just well enough to get beaten, if he does not crash. E. Morris, who- came down in the sprint, is in the eame category. However, both must get a winning turn soon. K. Hadfleld rode a really good race to finish well up fourth, just in front of Laivson, Crow and Gibbs.
The scratch men went in first rate style, and were rapidly closing the gap towards the finish. I. Bellini took time honours from R. Francis and S. Pinfold. The time, 32.32, showed that these riders are in great form at present. A feature of their riding is aleo unselfish pacing.
LADIES' CLUB
Miss Helen Robinson was the centre of interest in the Ladies' Club race last week, for it was her first race from scratch. She had to retire with crump early in the race, eo no real performance coiild be gauged! Miss Bobinson still has a substantial lead in the cup competition from Misses Baird and Swinburne, who arc a tie for second. Mies Hansen comes next. She has been placed every Saturday, and is steadily accumulating points, but she has not yet scored a win. Mise Violet Baird, the winner of the last race, was again riding practically to her best form. The first four laps were done in ]2.28, compared with her best of 12.21. This is the Becond occasion on which Mies Baird has had company in a race. The previous one was at Hamilton, when she was riding her second rpad race. On both occasions she gained first plage, and fastest time ae well.
