RELIEF BOOTS.

DISTRIBUTION WORK.

COUNTRY ORDERS FIRST.

HUNDREDS OF PAIRS.

Hie work of distributing to relief workers boots manufactured in Auckland to the order of the Unemployment Board is proceeding steadily under the direction of the local office of the Labour Department.

fo (late- the section of the building acing Fort Street, which is serving the lual purpose of store and distributing depot, has received 804 pairs of boots, including 629 pairs of the heavy brown "shooter" variety, particularly slnt ®i for rough country work wear, and lis of the black heavy working boot, wlncn will probably find greater demand m the metropolitan area. The most necessitous cases are bein£ supplied lust. These are described as the men on rationed work under No. ;> scheme in country districts whose allocation is necessarily lower than that of the men in the city area. Samples of the two classes of boots have been issued to 35 certifying ofliccis, and the return requisitions received number 25. The requisition does not necessarily represent the final order. oulcers are requisitioning as the requirements of the men in the area concerned are ascertained, and in some instances additional orders for supplies will be necessary, as selections cannot always be made en bloc.

There was a steady outward dispatch of supplies to country districts to-day. Large sacks, in preference to packing cases, are used. To Whangarei, for instance, 84 pairs of boots were forwarded, to Hamilton G7, and Paeroa 33. Other areas on this morning's mailing list ivcre Russell, Tauranga, Putaruru and L'e Aroha.

Fresh supplies of boots are arriving lailv, and 110 time is lost-by the officials it headquarters in meeting tlie requirements of the requisitions. The Depart-

ment's depot will continue to resemble a miniature boot factory with its stocked and labelled bins, until tne country orders are disposed of. A stai t will then be made with the distribution to eligible workers in the metropolitan area, and the store will itself become the delivery depot. In each dozen pairs of boots to be taken delivery of by the Department there are two of size six, three of size seven, four of size eight, two of size nine, and one oi size ten. Although not part of the order, a few pairs of boots representing the "out" sizes of five and eleven have been supplied. A pair ot stout laces accompanies every pair ot boots dispatched. , , \ tallv taken of the orders to date reveals that the sizes of boot in general demand are "sevens" and "eights.
