CHANGES MADE.

ROAD TRANSPORT.

PUKEKOHE AND TUAKAU

AUTHORITY'S DECISIONS,

Important alterations in the road transport passenger services between Auckland and Tuakau, via Papakura and Pukekohc, are provided for in reserved findings of the No. 2 Transport Licensing Authority delivered last night by tiie chairman, llr. J. A. C. Alluni. These cover the abolition of a through service from Auckland to Tuakau on week days and a reduction of the number of trips run in the service from Auckland to Pukekohc.

The application of Loughrin anil Mc--1 vor for a license for a service between Tuakau, Pukekohc. and Auckland, via Bombay,"and for the same service via Pukekohc East, was declined. The following reasons were given:—-

1. The railway service between Tuakan, Pukekohc, and Auckland is adequate to meet all the reasonable needs of the travelling public, except on Sundays, but the away from the railway stations on the routes Tuakau-l'nkekohe to Papakura warrant an omnibus service. Sunday Service. 2. The railway service does not appear adequately to cater for the needs of the travelling public on Sunday. The bus service has been fulfilling this requirement, and' as it appears only reasonable that week-end travellers should be able to make both the outward and the inward journey by the same means, we consider it reasonable that the bus service should be allowed to run on Saturday and Sunday. 3. The rail and road services combined are substantially in excess of the reasonable needs of the districts served, particularly between Auckland aud Papakura.

4. Messrs. Loughrin and Mclvor at present have no right to carry passengers whose journey both begins and ends between Bycroft's Corner, at the junction of Great South Road with the Drury-Waiuku main highway, and Auckland, with the result that they in effect serve only the district between 3vcroft's Corner and Tuakau, the through run to Auckland being simply for the convenience of passengers. "Wo are satisfied," the finding concluded, "that the through service is not justified, except on Saturdays and Sundays, and we have indicated to the operator that we are prepared only to grant a license for a service between Tuakau and Papakura for the whole week, and for a through service between Tuakau and Auckland on Saturdays and Sundays, in accordance with the terms of the present license. Messrs. Loughrin and Mclvor have indicated their unwillingness to accept a license on these terms, and their application is therefore declined." Reduction in Trips. The application of the Auckland and [Provincial Motor Bm Company for a license for a service from Auckland to Pukekohc, via Drury, was granted subI ject to a drastic revision of the timetable. The finding was as follows: — I "The railway service between Pukekohc and Auckland is adequate to meet all the reasonable needs of the travelling public except, on Sundays, but the settlements away from the railway stations on the routes warrant an omnibus service. The rail and road services combined are substantially in excess of the reasonable needs of the districts served, particularly between Auckland and Papakura. "The Auckland ahd Provincial Motor Bus Company serves the whole of the route between Pukekohc and Auckland, and we propose to grant them a license subject to the following: The number of trips, to and from Papakura to be reduced to eight, and the number of through trips to and from Pukekohc, which will be extensions of Papakura trips, to be reduced to six, in each case per day and each way. Except on Saturdays r.nd Sundays the omnibuses arc not to stop for the purpose of picking up and/or setting down passengers between Penrose Road and Wall's RoacT. The school children's tickets as applied for will be approved. Fare (Prescribed. "The fare fixed by the licensing authority for the Passenger Transport Company, Ltd., from Auckland to Papatootoe, "via Great South Road, either way, shall be the minimum fare to be charged by the Auckland and Provincial Motor Bus Company for the same section or any part thereof either way, and, further, that concession tickets may be issued subject to a like minimum. Tiie last point at which the licensee may pick up passengers on journeys to the city shall be at the intersection of Garland Road and Great South Road, and the first point at which the licensee may set down passengers on journeys from the city shall be at the intersection of Garland Road and Great South Road aforesaid. The licensee is restricted from operating this service in King Street, south of the intersection of Queen Street, Seddon Street, and King Street (Perkins' Corner), Pukekohe. The license will expire on February 28, 1934, and will be issued subject to the vehicles having been examined and passed by the inspecting officer. "In order to give effect to the decision of the authority, the Auckland and Provincial Motor Bus Company is requested to submit, within seven days, an appropriate time-table for the approval of the authority."
