QUIBBLING OVER RANSOM,

(Received 10.30 a.m.) SHANGHAI, June 11. The fate of the British officers of the steamer Nanchang, who have been held in capitivity by. pirates in the vicinity of Newchwang, for nearly two months, is reported to be nearing a crisis. Hitherto negotiations have been left in the hands of the Manchukuo authorities whose latest offer to pay ransom of 30,000 dollars was scornfully refused hv the bandit chief, who, despite the fact that the authorities hold relatives ot his as hostages, is demanding 1)000,000 dollars. The matter now passes to the Kwangtung military authorities who, after consultation with the British authorities, decided to envelop the pirates on land and sea and afterwards dispatch troops and aeroplanes to bring the matter to a speedy conclusion.
