GENUINE EFFORT.

Work for Lasting Peace in China. JAP. TROOPS WITHDRAW. PEKING, June 9. Probably, it will take, some time to liquidate the military situation in China, but a genuine effort to carry the Tangku armistice into effect appears to be under way. A notable instance of the improved feeling was, the arrival in Peking of a Japanese aeroplane carrying an officer detailed by the Japanese Army Chiefs to offer condolences over the Chinese loss of life in the recent hostilities. Foreign dispatches report that Japenese troops have begun to withdraw northward from Chinwangtao. On the Chinese side rapid progress is reported in the work of winding up the wartime organisations and transferring troops back to the provinces.
