LOCAL BODIES.

NEW LYNN BOROUGH COUNCIL.

An ordinary meeting of the Hew'Lynn Borouffh Council was held last even ng. The" Mayor (Mr. Qeo. Lawson) presided. Other councillors present were: Mwsie. R 4. Jeffrey, Geo. Severne, A. Woolley. g; Hards, F. Carter and J. Drury. Public Works—The borough foreman submitted a report covering numerous works within the borough. Storm water facilities had been improved by the construction of new cess pits, together with kerbing and channelling at road lnteisections. Concrete slabs for the culvert in Parker Avenue were being made by the council employees, and would shortly be in position. This would allow the paths up Hutchinson Avenue and Seabrook Avenue to be linked. Water Works.—The borough turncock reported that uew services had been installed at Portase Road for new buildings. A general overhaul of five hydrants was in progress. Bath main metere had been overhauled, tested and refitted. Urban Farm Lands Act. — Thirteen applications were before the oouncil aekipe for relief under the Act. The town olerk intimated that some of the owners had had their assessments reduced last year through the Court to the extent of £3500. The matter was referred to a special meeting of the council.

Loan Conversion. —This matter was briefly put to the council, and a suggestion from the Mayor that the Public Trustee be approached on the subject was approved. • - Practically all the district loans have been raised from that source. The town clerk was instructed to apply tp the Government Loans Board for its consent to the conversion of all the council's loans on which the interest rates exceed 4% per cent. .

ONEHUNGA BOROUGH COUNCIL. ■ A meeting of the Onehunga Borough Council was held last night, Mr. h. Morton, the Mayor, presiding. Grown Rates—lt was decided that in eases where a property is mortgaged to the Crown no action be taken against tlie mortgagor who has thrown up the property, 'but' that the Crown be asked to pav its share of special rates due, and the balance be written off; and in cases where mortgagor is still in possession legal proceedings be. taken against him for their recovery. Fire answer to a complaint from Mr. S. J. Brookfield, the Metropolitan Fire Board expressed regret that any annoyance should be caused to him by the soumHng of the fire siren at night, but it cannot discontinue its use for summoning the fire brigade. Street Lighting.—The Auckland Electric Power Board intimated that there would be a reduction in the street lighting charges as from April 1 last of £181 9/6.

Loan Conversion.—The town qlerk was instructed to apply to the Government Loans Board for its consent to the conversion of all the council's loans on which the interest rates exceeds 4% per cent.

Cheap Meat.—The Labour Department wrote statins that the Une-mjjloyment Board had arranged for a quantity o£ meat for the unemployed to be made avail-, able at lHd PW lb ex st;or e at the Weetfield Freezing Company's works. The council will consider the offer in committee-

Sign Posts.—The A.A.A. asked permission to sigivpost the direct route from Weetfield through Royal Oak and Mount Albert Road to Avondale and the Great North Road, for Helensville. The association is to be asked to give further information.

Overdraft.—The council's overdraft was fixed at £12,000. .

Domains Account.— A statement of receipts and expenditure in the Mount Smart and Onehunga Domains account was submitted for the year ended March 31 The receipts amounted to £525 16/, and left a credit balance o£ £2 18/. The assets for Mount Smart were set down at £37 17/2, and for Jelliooe Park at £785 18/2. The liabilities were £8 1/11. Included in the assets for Jellicoe Park was the playing apparatus, valued at £450, and a shelter shed, £150.
