PROMISED TO MUSEUM.
AUSTRALIAN COLLECTION. Speaking at a function tendered in his honour last evening, Mr. W. <H. Hemingway, a former Aucklander, who is on a visit from New York, said that he intended to bequeath to the Auckland Museum his collection of Australian aboriginal weapons • and implements, comprising 485 different articles, and also his collection or tropical insects.
At present on loan to the De Young Museum in San Francisco, Mr. Hemingway's collection of Australian articles lias been declared superior to either of the similar collections, those in the Smithsonian Museum at Washington and the British Museum. Natural history nnd anthropology have been Mr. Hemingway's main roci-eational studies. The Australian collection was obtained during four extensive trips into the hinterland of the Kimberley district in North-west Australia in 1021 and 1022, and is conservatively valued at £1500. All the articles are numbered and classified according to the tribes to which they belonged and the districts where they were secured.
